Abstract
There are a few reports about the incidence of HBsAg in¢¥ health care personnel and change of chemical liver function in asymptomatic HBsAg carriers.
It is well known ¢¥that the incidence of HBsAg in health care personnel is higher than that of healthy person and slight abnormal chemical liver function can be noted in asymptomatic HBsAg carriers.
To know the incidence of HBsAg, correlation between HBsAg positive and past histories, and abnormal chemical liver function in HBsAg carriers in medical students, doctors and nurses in Susan area, authors tested for HBsAg in 398 of medical students, 67 of medical doctors and 51 of nurses, and evaluated liver function test in 23 out of 32 HBsAg positve cairriers.
And also tested for hemoglobin level in 362 of medical students to know the correlation between hemoglobin level and the occurrence of HBsAg.
HBsAg was detected by counterimmunoelectrophoresis method.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The incidence of HBsAgg in medical students was. 6.03% (medical course: 5.95%, nursing course: 6.16%: male: 5.93%, female: 6.17%), which was higher than 3.2.% of healthy population. This means that the incidence of HBsAg in nursing course or female group was higher than that of medical course or male group. ,
2. The incidence of HBsAg. in medical personnel was 6..7% (doctor: 5.97%, nurse: 7. 84%), which means that the incidence in nurse was higher than that of doctor.
3. The incidence of HBsAg on the group with lower hemoglobin level in male and female- -group was 6.94% and 7.6%, respectively; and that with normal hemoglobin level in male and female group was, 5.76% and 4. 26%, respectively. This means that the incidence of HBsAg in group with lower hemoglobin level is higher than that of group with _normal hemoglobin level.
4. Among the past. histories in asymptomatic HBsAg positive person, the incidence of hepatitis, transfusion, hepatitis¢¥ in family and friend, and cases without past histories was 6.25%, 3.13%, 18.75% and 65.63%, respectively. This means that HBsAg carrier can be noted most frequently in the cases without preceding past history.
5. Among the abnormal liver functions tested in 23 cases of asymptomatic HBsAg carriers, the most frequent abnormal test was elevated SGPT level, as 47.87%. The incidence of elevated SGOT, TTT, globulin and total bilirubin level was 39.23%, 26. 09%, 21. 74% and 8.7%, respectively.
6. Above results mean that the incidence of HBsAg in medical personnel including medical students is higher than that of control group, and the most frequent abnormal liver function tests in asymptomatic HBsAg carriers are elevated SGPT and SGOT level.
